Beef Heart - oven baked or dehydrated

Make beef heart 2 ways for your pet! In the oven for a soft baked treat that gets stored in the fridge or freezer or in the dehydrator for a crunchy shelf-stable snack.

In the oven:

  1. Remove most of the fat from the outside of the beef heart. Often this is done by the grocery store before purchase. Cut into desired size, we like 1 cm cubes.

  2. Spread in a single layer on a parchment lined baking sheet.

  3. Bake at 375°F (191°C) for 30 mins.

  4. After cooling, store in the fridge for 2 days or in the freezer for up to 6 months. Treats are good served straight from the freezer.

For the dehydrator:

  1. Remove as much visible fat as possible from the outside of the heart. Fat doesn’t dehydrate, so it should always be removed when dehydrating.

  2. Cut into desired size pieces. We like bite-sized cubes or thin slices.

  3. Arrange in a single layer on lined dehydrator trays (parchment paper or silicone liners). Dehydrate at 130°F (54°C) for 24 hours. For thin slices, you may be able to remove from the dehydrator after 18 hours.

  4. Always test from every batch of snacks to ensure they are fully dried and shelf stable.

  5. Store in a paper bag at room temperature OR in airtight packaging with an oxygen absorber.
